Weather is starting to get better so the best way to spend a day for me is to do some flying and keep building my hours. My initial ideas was to fly to Sibson. Local weather around the airfield was not brilliant and i still want to explore destinations with longish runways before i start to visit fields with short grass strips. So instead I plotted a route to Wellsbourne Mountford (EGBW), close to Birmingham CTR. Continue reading ‘Flying from Cranfield to Wellsbourne (EGTC-EGBW)’

Early this morning it was looking like a fine spring day was going to be had…however by the time i check the weather online i was not sure if i would get to fly from a new airfield – White Waltham. This airfield is one of the oldest in the UK and i have met many pilots who trained here. I had arranged to meet Bruno who is one of West London Aero Club’s instructors. We met last year at Cranfield and become good friends. White Waltham is just on the edge of the London Control zone. Continue reading ‘Under Heathrow control zone : flying from White Waltham’
It has been more then 28 days since i flew Terry’s PA28. The Cessna 172 is still in the maintenance hanger awaiting some parts. Thus, i had to have a check ride with Terry to make sure that my flying skills are up to scratch – I was given the all clear. Continue reading ‘EGTC – Check ride in G-AXIO’
(Edinburgh – UK: April 17th, 2008) Aviation Without Borders and the Scottish Aero Club will be hosting an ‘Introduction to Aviation’ day on 19th April 2008 beginning at 10:30 at Perth Aerodrome. The day is named, for obvious reasons, Smiling Wings day and, with the support of EADS, will be Aviation Without Borders’ first in Scotland.

I picked my friend up from Heathrow this morning. He returned after spending a few months in Nepal. During his travels, he met a photographer. My friend Paul explained to the photographer that I was a pilot and to his surprise he had taken this photograph of Gautam Budha Airport (my own name is Gautam)….a nice message from the photographer too which reads “Dear Gautam, maybe one day you will fly to the birthplace of your namesake”
cheeky me has edited the image to make me the Budha….zoom in to the face for a close up. I have to one day visit this airport..

My friend Owen Williams now lives in Thailand. This latest creation from his mind has an aeroplanes among other transport vehicles.

When i woke this morning, I hadn’t expected that i would be doing some flying. Days that are this full of surprise are magical. Through my home window in West London, i could see the sun beaming through the high clouds. With my morning coffee , I called Cranfield having checked the TAFS and METARS on the web to book G-ECGC.

The last few times i flew G- ECGE have not been so great. i have been trying to master how a different set of hand controls are used on a type of aeroplane that i did not learn on. When i say not great, i had to get used to taxiing, and knowing how the steering works on the Cessna 172, with the differential breaking. Fine tuning the landing was also took a few hrs to get right. Cranfield (EGTC) to Peterborough Connington (EGSF)
Wind: 280 / 20 – TAS: 100knots
To introduce my friend Rusty to the world of general aviation, i planned a short route to Peterborough Connington. A sweet little airfield. Continue reading ‘Plane trip: cross country; EGTC – EGSF – EGTC’
Yesterday, Wednesday 16th, the weather was sublime for January. The sky was clear, the wind was gentle and both myself, the aeroplane and one of my greatest friends were all free to do some flying.
Last year we interviewed Barry Cardno from Wanaka in New Zealand. He is a terrific person who is in the later stages of publishing his book about his experiences of having a plane crash and life before and afterwards. He sent us this brilliant video of hi flying in NZ. You can just make out him using the bolt on hand controls during take off and landing..
He told me “You might be able to tell its warm here by how my 160hp Cessna 172 never lept into the air off any of the airstrips (all at 1000+ ft ASL, and 28-30′C). There was three of us on board, but the trick is always fly to the conditions.”
His interview for those who have not read it yet can be found here…please click to read the full text
It has been over a month since i last flew any aeroplane. Then the weather was just starting to get wintry. Now it is windy, grey and not so bright. I met Mike (chief instructor) at Cranfield flight training to discuss their new website which i am building for them. By lunchtime Donald hat become free to fly with me. It felt great to be sitting on the left hand seat doing the pre flight checks. Continue reading ‘Flying an old friend G-AXIO’
A few weeks ago when i finished my pilot training, my grandfather asked me if i would like to go to Duxford to watch the air show with him. An invitation that i could not turn down. I would get to spend a day with him and watch an airshow. The drive to Duxford from London was easy. When i got there, Peter (my grandad) had already set up a good pitch in front of the American hanger with picnic seats. a good spot to just chill out and watch the sky. I was very impressed with the turn out and slightly shocked at the level of interest from so many people towards aviation. My only other experience of an air show was Aero Expo early in the year. Here are some pictures from that day…
